I completed my Ph.D. at the end of 1971 within 20 months of transferring to Stanford University and was a junior professor in MIT's Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department from 1972 to 1981, with my office at the common boundary of the AI Lab and the Theory Group on the 8th floor of 545 Technology Squre. While on sabbatical at Stanford in 1981 I accepted a full professorship there, from which I retired in 2000 to pursue other interests, in wearable computing, autonomous driving, and climate change. (The noughts-and-crosses engine mentioned in the latter article was designed and built by me as a freshman in 1962 entirely from relays and stepping motors I obtained from the physics department's supply store.)
